For this he goes out of the wordǃ Am (therefore with cerebral suction) in the meaning of 'Umherluchten ...' (Cr. -R. 1969 NW . It seems as if it excludes 'Bokberg' as a translated name, so it will be an old alternative name. In fact, Bokberg is used for the Erongo. afr Die saak is klaarblyklik nie vry van lastige probleme nie. McKiernan gee vir 'Amieb' 'n tweede naam, dit kan of ’n alternatiewe naam wees of 'n vertaling, nl. sy Bokberg. By am = 'braten, backen' gee Kr.-R. 1969 NW 3 'n woord op wat hierby effens aansluit, nl. am-ǀnen = 'das grasende Wild', d.w.s., onder meer, bokke. Hierdie am- het egter geen suigkonsonant nie. Pastor Diehl stel weer ’n ander verklaring voor, nl. van 'Weerskyn'. Hiervoor gaan hy uit van die woord ǃam (dus met serebrale suigklap) in die betekenis van 'umherleuchten...' (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 26) plus -ei-b. Ons kan wel met 'n groot mate van gerustheid vir die eerste lid ’n ǃam- aanvaar; ook Namas self soos Hendrik Witbooi skryf dit so, reeds 'n 80 jaar gelede. Dit lyk dan of dit 'Bokberg' as 'n vertaalde naam uitsluit, sodat dit ’n ou alternatiewe naam sal wees. In werklikheid word Bokberg vir die Erongo gebruik. Topografies ge- sien (vgl. o.a. die opmerkinge van mev. Buchhorn) is die saak vir ǃam = groen waarskynlik die sterkste, dit is ook patroonmatig, en oud, reeds by Kroenlein, en het ’n teenstuk in die pleknaam Grünau, vgl. AMEIS. Die lid -eib word deur Kroenlein en ander verklaar as 'gesig, oppervlakte', o.i. korrek, en deur dr Vedder as die agtersetsel ei = 'auf, aufgrund von' (Kr.-R. s.v.) dus 'Groen-op'. Ons voorkeur gaan voorlopig uit na 'Groen-oppervlakte, -plek', met bestanddele ǃam = groen, en ei- [ai-] = gesig, oppervlakte, plus lokativerende -b. Die Namavorm ǃam is gedevelariseer vergeleke met Ou- Kaaps; dink bv. aan KAMDEBOO waar die Kam- = groen.
