Die treinspoor van Otavi na Otjiwarongo loop deur die Okaputa-plaaskompleks. Die formulier wat vir die PNK in 1954 vir die spelling van Okaputa ingevul is, bevat die volgende oor die betekenis van die 'ou naam' Okaputa wat ’n Hereronaam is: 'Digbegroeide bosse waar groot borne groei, volgens die eienaar van die plaas, mnr Erpf'. Alles dui in die rigting van mnr Krenz se verklaring dat die Namanaam Dumob beteken 'Plek (-mo-b, vir -ma-b, by ma = staan) waar daar soetdoringbome voorkom (du-)'. Dit was dan ’n ou alternatiewe naam uit Nama wat dit hier teen Herero afgelê het. Die wisseling -mo- en -ma- is nie ongewoon nie, vgl. goma-en gama- = bees. Die 'Gr. Ft.' in die opgawe van Hartmann staan vir 'Groot Fontein', ’n fontein wat oos van die spoor le en nog net in die distrik Grootfontein.
