Gamgois
We have no other direct explanation for this Khoekhoian name. Mr Krenz supports Dr Hartmann's spelling, literally 'water location', located in a panishing area of Grootfontein District east of the Etosha Pang area. Also undera (today, No. 308) statement does not provide any help. Undera means 'feel (place),' according to Kohler 1958 Heimatkalender 102 - The Khoekhoense and Hereroname removed semantically far apart. We have the suspicion that Dr Hartmann's first suction consonant was written off. The reason for the suspicion is the following. On the series SWA 1976 Skin 1816 Namutoni Le beside the farm, 308 and grinding on its eastern side, the farm Gutwohne 304. Apparently both were both placed before the subdivision. In such cases, the Khoekhoense name is usually the oldest ('The name was before the coming of the whites'), and the later whites' names are often a translation of the original name. Here it works well indeed. 'Excellence' is in Nama Xama (Rest 1960 DNW 28 under 'GIITE' as keyword). The whole then Xama ǀǀ Gois, and that means 'Excellence of Location', 'Welgely', possibly of a fountain (index -s, fern, sing.) The second member, 11goi, better, 11Goe-, means 'liege (allg.)' (Rest 39). Gamgois is then the old name of Gutwohne, and Gutwohne translates the old name , as we see it.
