Mandela Graduation: UCT bestowed the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) on Nelson Mandela on 30 November 1990. The sports fields on Upper Campus were used for the graduation ceremony in order to accommodate the large number of people present. UCT's offer of an honorary degree was made to Nelson Mandela in late 1989, before the dramatic unbanning of the ANC (2 Feb 1990) or his release from prison (11 Feb 1990).
