Artists have long focused on the image of the human skull, observing it as a reminder of mortality. Spit bite aquatint and dry point etching with hand-colouring, printed on 300gsm Hannemuhle paper and as a prompt to live well. ‘I once was what you are and what I am you also will be’, is an approximate translation of the words painted as if carved into the tomb of the skeleton pictured in the Holy Trinity fresco by Masaccio, the remarkable Florentine 15th century painter. Much later, Andy Warhol’s studio assistant Ronnie Cutrone famously remarked that to paint a skull is ‘like doing the portrait of everybody in the world’. The title I chose for this print comes directly from
