Label Information
South African abstract art of this kind may be seen as drawing inspiration from the tradition of landscape and still life oil painting by the familiar brushes of Irma Stern and Maggie Laubscher. The earthy pallet used in Mountain Pool to differentiate between the elements of earth and water are similar to the lush richness of the Expressionist compositions rendered by Campbell’s South African female artistic predecessors, who were in turn greatly influenced by European Modernist style and subjects. Despite her contemporary position Campbell, in true Modernist fashion, draws attention to the surface of the water she depicts but also that of the canvas itself using an impasto style technique, applying thick paint to bring about a sense of formal texture. As with many abstract art works, the composition evokes a certain mood and as with many landscape images, it is tranquillity which is captured in nature’s simplicity.
