This painting formed part of a solo exhibition titled Brief Journeys, held in Cape Town during 2006 and was inspired by a photo taken by the artist when travelling through the Karoo towns of Willowmore and Aberdeen, which are linked by a long, straight and lonely road. The intense blue of the cloudless sky and street devoid of people and traffic is typical of a hot summer day in a Karoo town dominated by the tall steeple of the local Dutch Reformed Church and houses designed with a veranda to provide relief from the harsh sun. Clare Menck explains the inclusion of church steeples in her landscapes referred to in the titles, not as the main focus of the paintings, but as theundeniable presence of a familiar landmark in Platteland towns. Her subjects range from street scenes and 'housescapes' in the Karoo, to interiors with figures, as well as portraits and occasionally 'quirky still lifes'. She has an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art from Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT and a MAFA from the University of Stellenbosch.
