A deeply religious man, Muafangejo here depicts the well-known Biblical story of Noah and the Ark. With a masterful use of space, he has included the many aspects of the tale - the ark itself, the heads of the figures involved, the animals and a short text relating what God said to Noah. One feels the pertinence of this story in light of the time in which it was made - a time when brutality and torture ruled South Africa and the neighbouring areas of Namibia and Angola. Thus, Muafangejo’s use of God’s words of warnings to a society overridden by violence and evil resonate poignantly through this composition. With its many lines, forms, shapes and words, this image is lively and full of movement. Muafangejo has used a stylised approach, where the animals and people’s heads have been depicted by basic outlines and shapes, minimalistic and bold. His choice of animals are distinctly African buck, elephants and giraffes among others. The ark bears an image of a dove which relates to the story of Noah, and is the recognised symbol of peace. Placed at the top of the composition, one feels Muafangejo’s strong desire for this one seemingly unattainable goal: peace.
