Part of a series of work Murray produced for a recent solo exhibition. The works seem to refer to Christian religious icons, particularly from the Byzantine era and contemporary West African barber shop signage. The cut out figures perform as signifiers of the portrayed person’s public persona and function in the outside world, while the portraits refer to them as individuals. Murray graduated with a degree in Fine Art from the University of Stellenbosch in 1996 and since then has had four solo exhibitions in Cape Town and participated in numerous group shows.
